Regular Gas or Premium?

Can you actually use regular gas even though your owner's manual recommends premium? The answer is yes!

Regular gas is actually fine for most cars today. In fact, only small number of vehicles like Cadillac Escalades and Dodge Vipers have high-compression engines that require premium gasoline. If your manual does not recommend any type of gas, you can use regular fuel since car was made to run best on regular fuel. For a car where premium fuel is recommended, there is a slight better performance you may get but that is too small to justify the high cost.

In fact, premium gas is sometimes even worse than regular fuel. Premium gasoline resists knock because it's harder to ignite than lower-octane fuels. As a result, some engines won't start as quickly or run as smoothly on premium. If your car is designed for regular gas, don’t switch to premium because higher octane provides no additional performance for cars that are designed to run on regular gas.

The truth of the matter is, profit is meaningless to modern engine. Regardless of what's specified in the owner's manual, the brand of fuel you choose doesn't really matter for as long as what you use is clean.
