How To Repair Car Paint Chips

The process of repairing car paint chips is pretty much the same with fixing car scratches. A scratch is merely a chip on uni-directional steroids. The only difference is that in car scratches, it takes more time to be able to blend in the new paint.

You can still repair the car paint chip even it is about one-fourth the size of a dime. If the chip is old and the metal inside it has rusted and started to lift the paint at the edges, sanding, priming and painting are the needed procedures. To fix this, you need an auto primer and the right paint. If you don’t know the color number for your automobile, you’ll have to find it on your vehicle identification plate. Once you know the color, buy a small bottle of touch-up paint at an auto parts store.

Below is the step-by-step procedure on how to repair car paint chips:

  • Clean the chip with soap and water. Dry it with a soft cotton cloth and gently soften the edges. Rub a dab of automotive polishing compound over the chip. Always remember that too much rubbing could damage the clear coat over the paint and make a cloudy mess.
  • You need denatured alcohol to finish cleaning. A few wipes with a soft cloth will do. Never flood it with alcohol because it removes the wax or remaining grime.
  • Apply a spot of primer with the butt end of a paper match. Fill the area within the chip without touching the edges of the surrounding paint. Have at least a half hour to dry the primer.
  • Put a small amount of paint over the primer coat. Always test the color on a piece of paper to make sure it matches. The test will also give you a feel for how much paint to load onto the applicator brush. Apply a second coat about one hour later.
  • Let the paint cure for several days and rub it out again gently with polishing compound to feather the edges of the repair.
